A senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan, who runs Google’s Knowledge and Information organization, referred to the popular social apps in a broader conversation at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference about Google’s products and the use of its artificial intelligence. During the discussion of the evolution of search, he casually noted that the young generation of users are now inclined towards apps like TikTok and Instagram instead of Google Maps or Search for discovery purposes. Raghavan was quoted as saying that we have been learning about how new internet users doesn’t have the mindset and expectations that we are adapted to. Along with this, he said that even the queries they ask are completely different. As per various reports, it is being noted that the users are not likely to type in keywords for search. They rather look for discovering content in new and much more immersive ways. He also shared stats, where he said that according to their studies, almost 40% of young users don’t go to Google Maps or Search for looking for a place for lunch. Instead, they go to Instagram or TikTok for the same. This figure seems to be a bit shocking, but it is what it is. Google has confirmed that the analysis was as per internal research. The survey included US users of ages 18 to 24. However, Google is hoping to bring changes into its Maps with time. The company will also have more immersive displays and a 3D model for maps coming soon. So, what are your thoughts on the same? Will Google be able to take over Instagram and TikTok again?
